Time Commitment
Plan to study for 1 to 1.5 hours per day, 5 days a week. Give yourself the weekends off to rest (or catch up if you missed a day).
Week 1: Fundamentals & Measurement
Your goal this week is to understand the absolute basics and master Domain A: Measurement.
- Day 1: Read the Task List
Print out the official BACB RBT Task List (3rd Edition). Read through it to understand what you're up against.
- Day 2-3: Master Domain A (Measurement)
Focus entirely on continuous measurement (frequency, duration) and discontinuous measurement (partial interval, whole interval). Read the Study Guide definitions.
- Day 4: Flashcards
Use the RBT Flashcards tool. Do 50 cards, focusing exclusively on terms related to Measurement and Assessment.
- Day 5: Baseline Practice Exam
Take the free 75-question Baseline Practice exam. Don't worry about your score! This just shows you your starting point.
Week 2: Skill Acquisition & Behavior Reduction
This is the core of the RBT job! You will learn how to teach new skills (Domain C) and decrease challenging behaviors (Domain D).
- Day 1-2: Domain C (Skill Acquisition)
Learn DTT, NET, chaining, and prompt fading. These concepts are heavily tested.
- Day 3: Domain D (Behavior Reduction)
Understand the 4 functions of behavior (SEAT) and differential reinforcement (DRA, DRO, DRI).
- Day 4: SAFMEDS Drills
Spend 30 minutes in the SAFMEDS tool building fluency with behavioral definitions.
- Day 5: Mock Exam #1
Take Mock Exam #1. Review every single question you got wrong. If you scored above 60%, you are on track.
Week 3: Ethics, Documentation & Weakness Targeting
Time to cover the remaining domains and start fixing the weak spots identified by your first mock exam.
- Day 1: Domains E & F
Review Documentation & Reporting and Professional Conduct. These are easy points on the exam!
- Day 2: Mock Exam #2
Take Mock Exam #2. Sit in a quiet room and try to finish within the 90-minute limit.
- Day 3-4: The Weakness Detector
Go to your Dashboard and check the Weakness Detector. Spend these two days re-reading the Study Guide for your lowest-scoring domain.
- Day 5: Mock Exam #3
Take Mock Exam #3. You should be aiming for a score around 70-75% now.
Week 4: The Final Push
This is it! Time to build your testing stamina and push your scores into the passing zone (80%+).
- Day 1: Flashcards & Glossary
Spend 1 hour rapidly reviewing flashcards. Make sure you know the difference between Negative Reinforcement and Positive Punishment.
- Day 2: Mock Exam #4
Take your final required mock exam. If you score 80% or higher, you are ready for the real thing.
- Day 3: Retake Missed Questions
Review all the questions you missed on Exams 1-4. Read the explanations carefully.
- Day 4-5: Rest!
Do not study the day before your exam. Get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and walk into the testing center with confidence.
