How to Become an RBT®

The complete guide — from eligibility requirements to passing the exam, getting certified, and building your career in Applied Behavior Analysis.

Step 01

Meet the Eligibility Requirements

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) sets the eligibility requirements for the RBT® credential. The barrier to entry is intentionally low — no college degree is needed.

High School Diploma or GED

You must have a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent, such as a GED). International equivalents are accepted.

At Least 18 Years Old

You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

Background Check

You must pass a criminal background check. The BACB uses a third-party vendor for this process. Some criminal history may not automatically disqualify you — the BACB reviews on a case-by-case basis.

No Degree Required

Unlike the BCBA® (which requires a master's degree), the RBT® credential has no college education requirement. This makes it one of the most accessible certifications in the ABA field.

Step 02

Complete the 40-Hour RBT Training

Before you can take the exam, you must complete a 40-hour training program that covers all the tasks on the RBT Task List (3rd Edition). This training provides the foundational knowledge you need.

40-Hour Training Curriculum

The training must cover all items on the current RBT Task List. It includes instruction in measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and professional conduct.

BCBA-Supervised

The training must be designed and delivered by a BCBA®, BCaBA®, or by someone under the supervision of a BCBA®. Many accredited programs are available online.

Online Options Available

You can complete the 40-hour training online through various approved providers. Look for programs that include interactive content, video instruction, and practice assessments.

Time to Complete

Most people complete the 40-hour training in 1–4 weeks depending on pace. Some accelerated programs allow completion in as little as one week.

Step 03

Initial Competency Assessment

After completing your 40-hour training, a BCBA® must conduct your Initial Competency Assessment. This is a hands-on evaluation where you demonstrate your ability to implement ABA procedures.

In-Person Evaluation

The assessment must be conducted in person (not remotely). A BCBA® or BCaBA® will observe you working with a client or in a role-play scenario.

Covers All Task List Items

You must demonstrate competence across all tasks on the RBT Task List. The assessor uses the official BACB competency assessment form.

Assessed by a BCBA®

Your assessor must be a certified BCBA® or BCaBA® who is in good standing with the BACB. This is often your supervisor or training instructor.

Valid for 90 Days

Your initial competency assessment is valid for 90 days. You must submit your RBT application within this window.

Step 04

The RBT® Exam

The RBT® exam is a computer-based, multiple-choice test administered at Pearson VUE testing centers. It's designed to test your knowledge of ABA concepts and your ability to apply them.

85 Multiple-Choice Questions

The exam contains 85 questions, with 75 scored and 10 unscored (pilot) questions. You won't know which are which, so treat every question as scored.

90-Minute Time Limit

You have 90 minutes to complete the exam. Most candidates finish with time to spare if they've studied well.

Pearson VUE Testing Centers

The exam is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide. You can find a center near you when you register through your BACB account.

Passing Score

The BACB uses a criterion-referenced passing score that is determined by subject matter experts. There is no fixed percentage — it varies slightly by exam form. Generally, scoring 80%+ on practice exams indicates readiness.

Step 05

After You Pass the Exam

Congratulations, you passed! Now there are a few important steps to officially earn and activate your RBT® credential.

Apply at BACB.com

Log into your BACB account and submit your RBT® application. You'll need to provide documentation of your 40-hour training and initial competency assessment.

Set Up Supervision

RBTs must receive ongoing supervision from a BCBA®. Your supervisor must provide at least 5% of your total monthly hours worked as direct supervision.

Complete Background Check

If you haven't already, complete the required criminal background check through the BACB's designated vendor.

Start Working!

Once your credential is active, you can work as an RBT® in clinics, schools, homes, and community settings under the supervision of a BCBA®.

Step 06

Maintain & Grow Your Career

Your RBT® credential opens the door to a rewarding career in ABA. But the journey doesn't stop at certification — there's ongoing requirements and exciting career paths ahead.

Annual Renewal

Your RBT® credential must be renewed every year. This includes completing a Renewal Competency Assessment with your BCBA® supervisor and paying the annual renewal fee.

Ongoing Supervision

You must maintain ongoing supervision throughout your career as an RBT®. Your BCBA® supervisor will provide feedback, support, and professional development.

Ethics Compliance

You must adhere to the RBT Ethics Code at all times. Violations can result in disciplinary action, including credential revocation.

Career Advancement

Many RBTs go on to pursue their BCaBA® or BCBA® certification. With experience and a graduate degree, you can become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and lead your own caseload.
