The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) certification exam is administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®) through Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide. The exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions — 75 scored questions and 10 unscored pilot questions that are being evaluated for future use. You will have 90 minutes to complete the exam.
The passing score is determined using a modified Angoff method, which adjusts for question difficulty across different exam forms. This means there is no fixed percentage — the passing standard varies slightly between exam versions to ensure fairness. The current pass rate is approximately 80%.
Before sitting for the exam, candidates must: (1) be at least 18 years old, (2) hold at least a high school diploma or GED, (3) complete a 40-hour RBT training from an approved provider, (4) pass an initial competency assessment conducted by a BCBA® or BCaBA®, and (5) submit a background check. No college degree is required.
Every question on the RBT exam maps to one of six domains defined in the BACB® 3rd Edition RBT Task List, effective January 1, 2026. Here is how the domains are weighted:
Collecting data using continuous and discontinuous measurement, permanent product recording, graphing data, calculating summary statistics (rate, mean, percentage), identifying trends.
Assisting with functional assessments, identifying the four functions of behavior, describing antecedents and consequences.
Implementing reinforcement, teaching procedures (DTT, naturalistic teaching), chaining, shaping, prompting/fading, discrimination training.
Implementing behavior reduction procedures based on function, extinction, reinforcement and punishment procedures.
Documenting services, session notes, communicating with supervisors, reporting changes.
Following the RBT Ethics Code, maintaining boundaries, confidentiality, cultural humility, responding to feedback, scope of practice.
Start with a full-length mock exam to identify your weak domains. Don't study first — your initial score shows exactly where to focus.
Focus on your weakest domains first. Domains C (Behavior Acquisition) at 25% and D (Behavior Reduction) at 19% carry the most weight.
ABA has extensive technical vocabulary. Spaced-repetition flashcards are the most efficient way to memorize terms like motivating operations, response cost, and differential reinforcement.
