The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®) exam is a comprehensive certification exam administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®) through Pearson VUE testing centers. The exam consists of 185 multiple-choice questions — 160 scored and 25 unscored pilot questions — with a 4-hour time limit.
To be eligible, candidates must hold a master's degree (or higher) in behavior analysis, education, or psychology from an accredited institution. They must also complete BACB-approved coursework (315 classroom hours for the 6th Edition) and accumulate the required supervised fieldwork hours (2,000 hours supervised experience or 1,500 hours concentrated supervised fieldwork).
The BCBA exam is significantly more challenging than the RBT exam, with first-time pass rates near or slightly above 50% and retake pass rates around 20–25%. Questions require not just factual knowledge but the ability to apply behavior-analytic concepts to complex real-world scenarios.
The BCBA exam is based on the BACB® 6th Edition Task Content Outline. The content areas and their approximate weights are:
Philosophical underpinnings of behavior analysis, concepts and principles, measurement, data display, and experimental design.
Behavior-change considerations, assessment procedures, and selecting behavior-change interventions.
Fundamental and advanced behavior-change procedures including reinforcement, punishment, extinction, stimulus control, and complex interventions.
Intervention and treatment planning, implementing and monitoring behavior-change programs.
Supervising and training staff, organizational behavior management, and supervision ethics.
Responsible conduct, ethics standards compliance, and ethical decision-making in professional practice.
