Most RBTs fall between $16.60 and $26.42 an hour. On a full-time schedule of 2,080 hours, $20.66 an hour is about $43,000 a year; RBT job postings on Indeed average $45,497.

The two numbers measure different things. PayScale reports what RBTs say they are paid; Indeed averages what employers advertise. Advertised salaries usually assume full-time hours, while many RBT jobs are part-time or pay only for session hours, which is why the hourly figure is the more useful one to compare.
Other trackers publish their own averages, and they do not all agree. Treat any single number — including these — as a starting point, and check it against current postings where you live.
Pay by state: why there is no table here
State averages for RBTs are built from small samples. On the day this guide was checked, Indeed's average for California came from 18 job postings — too few to tell you what a typical RBT there earns. A table of state averages would look precise without being accurate, so this guide does not publish one.
To find your local rate, search current RBT postings in your city, convert each to an hourly rate, and look at the middle of the range rather than the highest offer. Pay tracks the local cost of living and how many providers are competing for staff, so neighboring cities can differ.
What getting certified costs in 2026
Canceling or rescheduling 31 days or more before your appointment is free. The 40-hour training and the initial competency assessment are provided independently of the BACB, so their cost depends on who delivers them; many employers provide both to new hires.
Where the pay ceiling is
The RBT is an entry-level credential, and the largest raises come from moving up it. Job postings on Indeed for Board Certified Behavior Analysts average $91,903 a year (63.2k postings, updated September 2026) — roughly double the RBT figure. Getting there takes years, not months:
- BCaBA — a bachelor's degree, behavior-analytic coursework (or an ABAI-accredited degree), and 1,300 hours of supervised fieldwork (1,000 if concentrated). BCaBAs practice under BCBA supervision.
- BCBA — a master's degree through one of the BACB's pathways and 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (1,500 if concentrated).
Fieldwork hours can be earned while you work, so an RBT job at an employer that offers BCaBA or BCBA supervision is worth more than its hourly rate alone.
How to earn more as an RBT
1. Compare hourly rates, not headline salaries
Many RBT roles are part-time or paid per session hour, so an annual figure in a posting can hide a lower hourly rate. Put every offer in dollars per hour before comparing.
2. Ask what time is paid
Drive time between home visits, session cancellations, supervision meetings and documentation time are handled differently from employer to employer. Two offers with the same hourly rate can pay very differently once those are counted.
3. Specialize and stay
Experience with a particular population or setting, and a record of reliable attendance and good client outcomes, is what you bring to a pay conversation. Ask your supervisor what would justify a raise and when it will be reviewed.
4. Negotiate from posted ranges
Look up current postings for RBT roles in your area and use their posted pay as your reference point. Employers expect it; many RBTs never ask.
5. Move up the credential ladder
The large pay step is certification as a BCaBA or BCBA. Both require a degree and months of supervised fieldwork, so plan for it while you work as an RBT — see the requirements below.
