How to Increase Your RBT Salary

1. Gain Experience

RBTs with 3+ years of experience earn 15-25% more than entry-level. Specialize in a population (autism, developmental disabilities, geriatrics) to further increase your value.

2. Pursue BCBA® Certification

The single biggest salary jump comes from earning your BCBA®. BCBAs earn $65K–$100K+ annually, nearly doubling RBT pay.

3. Relocate to High-Demand Areas

Metro areas in California, Massachusetts, and New York consistently pay more than rural areas. Some employers offer relocation assistance.

4. Get Specialized Training

Additional certifications in crisis management (CPI, PCM), feeding disorders, or verbal behavior can increase your pay by $2-5K annually.

5. Negotiate Your Rate

Many RBTs don't negotiate. Research the market rate for your area on Glassdoor and Indeed, and present your value (client outcomes, reliability) during pay discussions.
