About Recertification

RBTs must complete annual competency requirements. BCaBAs and BCBAs must continue their education to maintain certification.

What it takes to keep each BACB certification

RBT: what changed in 2026

The BACB moved RBTs from yearly renewal to a 2-year cycle starting January 1, 2026.

RBTs recertifying in 2026 still submit the RBT Recertification Competency Assessment, and their next recertification is two years later.
From then on, each cycle requires 12 professional development units (PDUs). RBTs certified or recertified in 2026 recertify in 2028 with their 12 PDUs and no competency assessment.
PDUs can come from three places: in-service training from the organization you work for, professional development events offered by BACB-authorized ACE providers, and behavior-analytic university coursework passed with a C or better.
Supervision is unchanged: at least 5% of the hours you spend providing behavior-analytic services each month, including two face-to-face contacts, at least one of them individual.

BCaBA and BCBA: continuing education

BCaBAs need 20 CEUs and BCBAs need 32 CEUs in each 2-year recertification cycle.
Both need at least 4 of those CEUs in ethics. Anyone who supervised RBTs, BCaBAs or trainees during the cycle also needs 3 CEUs in supervision.
CEUs must be earned inside the cycle they are applied to; extra CEUs do not roll over to the next cycle.
BCaBAs must also keep practicing under a qualified BCBA supervisor — without one on record, the certification is treated as inactive.

ABA Sprout's Recert Prep modules are study resources. They are not BACB-approved continuing education and do not award CEUs or PDUs. Earn those from the sources the BACB accepts, such as ACE providers, your employer's in-service training (for RBT PDUs) or university coursework.
